Ratifies the People’s Declaration
Belize City: Saturday 2nd February 2019
Delegates for the People’s United Party National Party Council converged at St. Catherine’s Auditorium in Belize City on Saturday February 2nd, 2019 where they unanimously ratified the “People’s Declaration.” This historic “People’s Declaration” was presented at a national executive meeting held at Independence Hall on the 23rd January, 2019 after six months of nationwide consultation, the Party Leader, Hon. John Briceño visited all 31 constituencies to listen to the views and concerns of Belizeans regarding the upcoming ICJ Referendum scheduled for April 10th, 2019.
Among the many concerns pointed out during the listening tour is the fact that Belizeans need a fully financed, balanced and comprehensive education campaign by an independent Referendum Commission as it is very obvious that the present education campaign being conducted mostly by highly paid government diplomats is disorganized, under-financed and not balanced.
Other concerns voiced is that of political interference at the Vital Statistics Office causing a backlog in applications for voters applying for their documents in order to re-register , Elections and Boundaries Department failure to issue the new voters identification cards and the contentious Foreign Minister, Wilfred Sedi Elrington, whom the people strongly believe should step down.
Having listened to the views and concerns of thousands of Belizeans across the country, factoring into consideration the informed position of all Standard Bearers, the National Executive and today, the National Party Council, The People’s United Party unanimously ratified the People’s Declaration with a resounding “NO” to the ICJ.
In addressing the delegates at the Party Council Meeting, Party Leader, John Briceño, thanked everyone for their honesty, frankness and most importantly for the respect they showed during his ICJ listening tour. He said that having gone across the country to listen to the people has strengthened his conviction. Henceforth, until April 10th, Standard Bearers and local executives will hit the streets house to house to explain the People’s Declaration to voters and recommend that they vote NO to the ICJ.
Responding to questions by the media about the results of the consultation and if he met any animosity, Party Leader Briceño, said that in every constituency that he visited, the people expressed a resoundingly NO to the ICJ especially because they do not trust the government negotiations. He added that others believed that they were not ready or that the education campaign is unbalanced, disorganized and under financed. He assured that the PUP is united in its resolve to have the people of this country vote “No to the ICJ” on April 10th.
To ensure this, the Party is working on a plan to organize public meetings, distribute brochures and banners . The party also plans to launch a social media ,tv and radio campaign to get the message out. Briceño assured the audience that the People’s United Party is all cranked up and ready to spread the “No to the ICJ” message.
