This Saturday March 1st will mark two years since our Towns and Cities came under the control of nothing less than slipshod UDP City and Town Councils. In Belize City, reports are the City Council is preparing a big celebration. In other words her worship the Mayor will get another chance to slip into a new dress, brush on new makeup and pretend as if all is well in Belize City, when the reality is all is not well in the old capital.

The recent UDP appointments have raised eyebrows. There’s something fishy going on.

The UDP is keeping it all in the family and the appointments have mostly been awarded to well-connected UDPs and their sisters and brothers, cousins and uncles and aunts.

The long-awaited Elections finally came on the 7th day of February 2008. The Police Department and its members believed that when the Election was over so was the stress and anxiety that came along with it. Alas that was not true, it was just the beginning of victimization and the people of Belize who expect protection and service from the Police are being neglected.

Before Elections the Police Department was in a tight spot because as the officers were trying to do their jobs they were faced by party supporters of the then Opposition who threatened the officers thus making the officer’s job very hard and almost impossible.

The dust has not settled since the elections of 2008, yet as it dissipates Belizeans are seeing the outline of the ‘red tide’ that has begun to ascend upon us.

The question is, will we sit and just accept it? There would be nothing wrong with the UDP’s culture of protest and rebellion if violence and victimization were not a part of the ingredients. The wanton firing of Belizeans from their jobs deserves more than just a cheering squad on the morning shows. Lives are being destroyed because of someone’s asinine perception of what power is!

“In with the red (UDP)… out with the blue (PUP)”, so said an election campaign song of the new UDP Government. It seems that along with “out with the blue (PUP)”, there were UDP back singers barely whispering “out with transparency too”.

Two high-level Cabinet meetings have been held by Prime Minister Dean O. Barrow since February 7th and nothing official has come out. What was discussed? What important decisions were made? What’s going on?
