Within the next 24 hours the people of Belize will be going
to the polls to elect a new government.
Since the Prime Minister early in the New Year set the date for general election on 7th. February, the political campaign has reach a high pitch. The noise level by now had reached a high and low level from the sublime to the ridiculous, even crass. Contributing to the latter has been the gross abuse of the freedom of speech and the quality of the UDP slate of candidates as compared with the PUP team. Even the field of independent and lesser party candidates, certainly offer a high caliber of candidates than the UDP. If the people of Belize want truly representative government certainly they want to see a certain level of intelligence inside our legislature to expect reasonable debate on national issues. This has to be a factor that deserves serious consideration when voters go to the polls on Thursday. We must be reminded that in a democracy, the people get the government they deserve. We deserve reasonably intelligent men and women to take this country forward. It would be too costly an experiment to change at this time when the national economy is robust and when the development of the country had taken such a great leap forward. The rough and tumble of electoral politics is just that. We have come to accept that. What we cannot, and should not accept, nor tolerate, is the fact that the United Democratic Party leadership is prepared to take to a notch higher the pronouncements of “revolution” and of violence by the Leader and former Leader of the Opposition party, Dean Barrow and Manuel Esquivel. The promotion and encouragement of this type of criminal activity in this peaceful haven of democracy, must, MUST be rejected by the electorate. And this is even before we begin to really examine the issues. The People’s United Party has always delivered its manifesto promises. The PUP has always been prepared to take risk in the interest of national development. It is the PUP that continues to keep the Guatemalan issue of the front burner to have it resolved through soft diplomacy - not with UDP violence! It is the PUP that has taken this country forward constantly reforming the Constitution for a greater democracy. The proposal for an elected senate is a case in point. At best the United Democratic Party is mediocre. Their promises are superficial and its vision shortsighted. This is because the Party’s leader, Dean Barrow, cannot see beyond his reflection in the mirror. It is a reflection of an egomaniac, a man full of his own conceit, full of glitter and short on substance. A man who is certainly not, and will never be, a servant of the people. In his head, he expects people to serve him. He is a man suffering from the residual effects of the slave master. Is this what you want? Or do you want a leader like Said Musa, full of compassion, politically savvy and dedicated to service? The choice is yours. We suggest that the time to save Belize from an Opposition train wreck is on 7th. February. For your own sake vote blue. Put your X next to the blue box on your ballot. |
