“In with the red (UDP)… out with the blue (PUP)”, so said an election campaign song of the new UDP Government. It seems that along with “out with the blue (PUP)”, there were UDP back singers barely whispering “out with transparency too”.

Two high-level Cabinet meetings have been held by Prime Minister Dean O. Barrow since February 7th and nothing official has come out. What was discussed? What important decisions were made? What’s going on?

It appears PM Barrow will no longer continue the sensible practice of issuing Cabinet briefings for public knowledge. These briefings started by Said Musa and the PUP in 1998 ended an era of a Government that worked in secrecy. It made Government decisions public. It informed of new policy directions, listed new investments being made, and what crucial changes were taking place that would impact the lives of Belizeans.

These briefings, which were carefully penned after every briefing, was the responsibility of the Cabinet Secretary.

Two Cabinet meetings have been held and the UDP Government has kept hush-hush. Later we’ve learned of the suspension of all land transactions, the halting of constructions sites in San Pedro, the firing of countless public officers – signs of a puerile Government already spiraling out of control.

When the BELIZE TIMES called the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary James Murphy on the future of Cabinet briefings, he indicated that he had no knowledge and that PM Barrow had given no indication that it should be continued.

Mr. Murphy suggested that we pose the question to newly appointed CEO in the PM’s office, former UDP Campaign Manager, Audrey Wallace. What a waste of time that would have been. But as far as we’re concerned the CabSec should know what his role is, and Mr. Murphy, you’re no rookie sir.
