The dust has not settled since the elections of 2008, yet as
it dissipates Belizeans are seeing the outline of the ‘red tide’ that has begun
to ascend upon us.
The question is, will we sit and just accept it? There would be nothing wrong with the UDP’s culture of protest and rebellion if violence and victimization were not a part of the ingredients. The wanton firing of Belizeans from their jobs deserves more than just a cheering squad on the morning shows. Lives are being destroyed because of someone’s asinine perception of what power is! Across this nation there is unease, a palpable fear of the UDP. And it is with good reason. The lines in the public service are hot with talk of who is going home. It is a sad day when some take glee in watching a fellow Belizean being victimized because he or she supports or is perceived to be a supporter of the PUP. That didn’t happen in 1989, 1998 or 2003.It was disheartening to hear the myopic sentiments of Jason Guerrero on Krem’s morning show advocating the termination and discrimination of Belizean bread winners from their jobs because they support the PUP. Why didn’t he sing this song when the PUP took office? Sadly it is sentiments like those that remind that slavery and its deleterious legacy still linger. There are also people who will try to blame crime on the PUP. The assertion by a certain newspaper editorial that the PUP conceived and birthed the intensified crime of today is patently ludicrous and defies logic. The selective author of the diatribe conveniently forgets the battle-like, murderous days of the eighties when some of Dean Barrow’s clients came home from the United States with new toys. He conveniently forgets the name assigned to Orange Walk when bullets flew and grenades blasted homes. Rambo Town was the order. It is from that same culture that exploded under the UDP that some prominent Belizeans got very rich quickly. To have them turn around and act holier than thou is an insult to Belizeans who can figure out things for themselves. With one breath they are sympathetic to the UDP, so much so they handle Mayor Zenaida Moya with kid gloves, while we live in squalor, and in another persona they want to influence the PUP. That is not being independent, it is being confused. To ride the tide and pretend to call elections is liadness. It is that same boorish, selfish element that we do not want in the PUP. Power to the people, every time. |
