This Saturday March 1st will mark two years since our Towns
and Cities came under the control of nothing less than slipshod UDP City and
Town Councils. In Belize City, reports are the City Council is preparing a big
celebration. In other words her worship the Mayor will get another chance to
slip into a new dress, brush on new makeup and pretend as if all is well in
Belize City, when the reality is all is not well in the old capital.
After two years of the UDP, nothing has improved. Nada! The
problem of deteriorating streets has worsened. Two years ago the UDP Council
promised to pave all streets and keep them maintained. Two years later, the
Council’s report card on street paving has a big F.
If a worse grade existed, CitCo would be entitled to it in the area of drain cleaning and garbage maintenance also. In fact, CitCo has choked the life out of a garbage cleaning system that worked under the former PUP Council. The sanitation company, SEL, no longer exists, and there employees were fired. The comprehensive garbage-pick up in Belize City that the Belize Waste Control Limited carried out under the PUP, was undermined when the UDP CitCo decided to change the contract terms, causing the garbage collector’s to stop doing all the work done prior to the UDP. The UDP has had some success at City Hall. They flourished in carrying on the legacy of the UDP – victimization and retrenchment. They fired more than 250 workers who worked at the Council – first was the sanitation department, then the traffic officers, and followed by low-salary paid employees, many who were single mothers whose only fault seemed was that they were hired by the former PUP Council. The UDP Council said it was cutting expenses, but how could it when it also hired their own UDP friends at much higher salaries? Messing up the city and the lives of hundreds of families was the easiest part of the City Council’s two years in administration. Now the Mayor pretends that all is well and that they have done a good job. She boasts that “soon” Albert and Regent streets will be paved. They should be ashamed, that after two years they have nothing good to show as a Council. No street paved, the new infrastructure project, no new street with lights, no new tourism project, not even a single audit to show how our tax dollars are being spent. In two years the UDP Council has been brilliant in showing why they must not be given another chance next year. Our municipalities and people deserve much better. |
