On February 7, 2008, the people of Belize elected the UDP as
their new government with Dean Barrow as Prime Minister of this great nation.
The question in everybody’s mind, however, is whether he really is the Prime
Minister. Or does Barrow answer to a ghost from the past?
When Barrow announced his new Cabinet and list of CEOs the
shocking news came when Mr. Manuel Esquivel was appointed Senior Advisor to the
Prime Minister; but that’s not all, he also holds ministerial ranking. What
does this mean? It means Mr. Esquivel has power, power that the people of
Belize took away resoundingly in 1998. Why would he be given power if he didn’t
do well with power when he was PM? What makes Prime Minister Barrow feel that
he will do any better now? It has yet to be seen.
Mr. Esquivel is now being driven in former Prime Minister Said Musa’s vehicle, isn’t that a slap in the faces of the Belizean people? Isn’t that more money being wasted? Tell the people PM why has Mr. Esquivel been brought back into power? Why aren’t you listening to the people? The people voted Mr. Esquivel out in 1998 which means that it was not the people’s wish for him to be in office ever again. Let us not forget why Mr. Esquivel A.K.A "THE VAT MAN!" was voted out of office. He was the man behind VAT, the tax that led to many Belizeans having to pinch money to make ends meet, the man behind the retrenchment, the man behind the taxing of our savings, the man under whom so many businesses closed down because there was just not enough money in the country. With all this, it makes us wonder, Prime Minister Barrow was that little list in your head similar to the list Mr. Esquivel had in his head when he sent home all those public officers at Christmas? Belizeans you would think that the madness ends there but that is only the beginning. There is yet another member of the Esquivel family holding rank in this new government. Who is it you may ask, none other than David Esquivel, the son of Manuel Esquivel. He is now the chief advisor to the Belize City Council and reportedly collects a hefty salary. A person with such rank would at least be expected to live in the city, better yet the country, but NO, Mr. David Esquivel lives in Miami! So what is he being paid for if he is not in the country? Can you answer that one Mayor Z? Or is Laura (ANOTHER Esquivel) calling the shots at City Hall? This great tale still has more punch behind it. The family affair continues. Mrs. Kathy Esquivel, wife of Manuel Esquivel is now the Director of AIDS Commission. Hopeful the thousands in grants are spent the right way. With all these Esquivels in high profile government positions, I wonder if Dean Barrow is really Belize’s Prime Minister after all. Would the real Prime Minister please stand up? |
