None Fi Yu nor Fi Mi, just Fi di UDP
In last week’s edition of the BELIZE TIMES it was reported that the VATMan Manuel Esquivel, his wife, daughter and son hold very high ranking positions in the new UDP Government. But the Esquivel family is not the only one with strings in the new UDP Government. Foreign Affairs Minister Sedi Elrington booted a hard working emissary, working with dignity and competence for the past 10 years in New York, to make way for his own daughter. Smells like nepotism, doesn’t it?I bet the Belizean people would like a job like that but not everyone is lucky in this government. It’s not what you know but who you know that will get you in high positions. The story doesn’t end there. First time UDP politician but a veteran in politricks, Gaspar Vega, has smuggled something into the Free Zone – his son-in-law as the new CEO. No tender sent out, no bids accepted. Done just the way contrabandistas do it. UDP Chairman and new leader of Government Business in Senate Doug Singh lobbied for his brother to become CEO of the Tourism Ministry. UDP Representative John Saldivar harassed everyone until his sister was appointed in the Ministry of Housing. Former Senator Ambrose Tillett got his cousin in as CEO of the Ministry of Youth. Finally, some call it the “rekindling” of a love affair, others say its just mere coincidence that Dean Barrow’s ex-wife, Lady Lois Young-Barrow who was the voice of the opposition through the ACB, was recently awarded with the post of Chairlady of the Social Security Board. As the days go by, more UDP family members and sympathizers will be sneaked into high positions, positions that could be competently filled with the right people. It’s only a matter of time before the entire government is a family affair! The lyrics to the 2008 UDP song weren’t kidding when it said Fu Yu, Fi Mi, Fi All a Wi! But apparently it was only for those within their families. |
