The UDP built its 2006 Municipal Election campaign on the twin platforms of transparency and good governance.  After a year and a half it is plain for all Belizeans to see that like all the other broken [[UDP]] promises of the past, they have replaced transparency with spin-doctoring and good governance with the politics of hate, violence and intimidation In fact, since [[Dean Barrow]]’s infamous call for civil disobedience, which was followed with the destruction of downtown Belize City, the Opposition has been mired in an internal state of instability.  Over and over again, UDP leaders, elected representatives and supporters have issued threats of violence.  Kenny Morgan threatened to detonate a grenade in the House of Representatives.  [[Zenaida Moya]] threatened to shut down Belize City if she wasn’t given the Head Tax money.  And Barrow of course threatened that there would be hell to pay as he encouraged his supporters to lynch and hang opponents from the Swing Bridge.

With such explosive language coming from the Leader of the Opposition is it any wonder that the UDP have now become violent.  On a daily basis the vile UDP mouthpieces, Joe and Juliet, insult and attack ordinary Belizeans for no reason.  Dean Barrow has given them carte blanche to cast aspersions on people and accuse them falsely.  They have even gone so far as to suggest to their listeners to ‘send a message’ to certain persons.  They encouraged the sabotaging of the utility companies. They praised those who destroyed private and government property in [[Belmopan]].  They were in Trial Farm supporting Chendo Urbina as he attacked Jorge Aldana.  They laughed as Aldana was again attacked, this time by henchmen of Gaspar Vega.  All these were with the blessings of Dean Barrow, who has made it very clear that he supports violence.

Last week’s arrest and arraignment of Councillor Dean Samuels is but another example of the manifestation of the UDP violent tendencies.  It was reported that Dean Samuels, the Councillor with the Traffic Portfolio, was involved in a vehicular accident.  However, instead of owning up to his mistake, Samuels allegedly discharged his firearm into a crowded street, after threatening the person whose car he crashed into.  He came to court and he was charged.  All this happened one week ago, and still not one member of the UDP hierarchy has commented on it.  Zenaida was only interested in gobbling up the portfolios that Samuels held.  Barrow has seemingly chosen to pretend that it didn’t occur.

But it did occur and Dean Samuels must be prosecuted for the crimes he allegedly committed.  Likewise, Gabriel Martinez must be investigated for alleged accidents in the Free Zone and on the Northern Highway and prosecuted where necessary.  The UDP will not be allowed to buy their way out of these crises.  They must answer to the people and not with Delroy’s spin.  There is so much hate and violence inside the UDP.  What we hear and see outside is only a spill over.  Unfortunately, it will only get worse.  The UDP is not ready to govern – look at how our municipalities are being run – they can’t even govern themselves.

Thousands of Belizeans have joined with the [[PUP]] to reject the destructive culture of the UDP.  It showed in the results of the Village Council elections. It showed on July 1st at the Party’s National Convention.  It showed in Toledo and Stann Creek during the Prime Minister’s consultation tour.  It is showing countrywide as more and more Belizeans have pledged their support for the PUP in the 2008 general election.  Whereas the UDP has a record of violence, the PUP has a record of achievements, as we continue to build Belize on the foundation of social justice and equal opportunity for all.
