This Sunday the People’s United Party will elect a new leader. This will be an historic event if for no other reason that over the past 57 years, (since it’s founding on September 29 1950), the PUP has been at the centre of a peaceful constructive revolution that transformed the political, social and economic landscape of the nation of Belize. The PUP has always believed in the people of Belize as the agent of their own liberation and progress. It is this belief that propelled the party when in government to invest heavily in education, health and housing. The PUP’s vision has always been to work with Belizeans in order to empower the people to improve their condition in life and to shape their own destiny.

To quote from a statement on the philosophy of the party published in the 1970’s:

“Our revolution is not imported from abroad. It is truly Belizean with roots in our country’s history. The movement benefited from the use of universal principles but made sure that these principles had their correct local application. It is neither Adam Smith nor Karl Marx but is rooted in the character and the will of the Belizean people who evolved from a unique blend of the indigenous and the immigrant from Africa, Asia and Europe.”

Enshrined in the party’s Constitution are the principles, aims and objectives of the party. Among these is the core belief that every Belizean is entitled to the fullest enjoyment of human rights including a right and a duty to participate in the development of the nation and to enjoy a fair share of the fruits of development. A principal objective is to ensure our natural resources are owned, controlled, managed and utilized in such a way as to directly benefit the people.

The crowning achievement of the PUP was undoubtedly the successful attainment and consolidation of our people’s aspiration for freedom and independence in a sovereign democratic state of Central America in the Caribbean region.

In the annals of political parties in Belize, the PUP will always enjoy pre-eminent recognition. It is the most successful party in Belize’s history. Prior to independence in 1981, the PUP won every general election since 1956 when George Price became the leader. Since independence, it is the only party that has won back to back successive national elections (1998-2003; 2003-2008) with Said Musa as leader.

The new leader who takes office on Sunday in Belmopan has an uphill challenge ahead. The party is now in opposition having suffered defeat at the polls on February 7. But as Sam Rayburn once said, political parties have their ups and downs. But great ideas go on forever.

And perhaps the greatest idea to come out of the PUP is right there in its motto: “serve the people”.

Once the leader and all who believe in the PUP recommit to being and becoming servants of the people, there will be no stopping the return of this great People’s United Party.
