Belmopan City, March 27, 2008 - The Belize Bank Junior Bulldogs won both games of the U-26
basketball `championship finals against the Central American university
champions, the UB Black Jaguars, to clinch the championship title.
In Game 1 at the Belize City Center on Wednesday night, the Belize Bank Junior Bulldogs tamed the UB Black Jaguars 59-47. Top Scorers for Belize Bankbulldogs were Darwin 'Puppy' Leslie with 16 pts, 6 rebounds, 1 assist , 1 block , and 2 steals while Densmore 'Wabble' Edwards added 14 pts, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.
Belize Bank Junior Bulldogs are U-26 Champs UB took the lead at the end of the 1st quarter 17 - 19 but lost it at the half 34 - 31. From there the Belize Bank Junior Bulldogs never relinquished the lead with the 3rd quarter ending 49 - 39. In the 4th quarter the defense on both ends was tight with the 1st basket not being scored until 3:54 remaining. In the end the Belize Bank Junior Bulldogs turned the UB Black Jaguars roar into a mere kitty cat meow. In Game 2 on Thursday night at the UB sports complex, the Belize Bank Junior Bulldogs outlasted the UB Black Jaguars 63-61 to seal their championship win. Top Scorers for Belize Bank were Greg 'Chipy' Rudon with 20 pts (4 x 3's) , 4 rebounds and 2 assists, while Darwin 'Puppy' Leslie added 10 pts (8-ft's) , 9 rebounds, 4 assist, 2 blocks and 7 steals.
UB Jaguars are sub-champs Lennox Bowman led the UB Jaguars with 14 pts, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal, while Stephen 'Muerte' Williams added 13 pts, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. The game started in similar fashion as game 1 with UB leading at the end of the 1st quarter 20 - 17 and Bze Bank at the end of the 2nd quarter 34 - 33. The 3rd quarter it was UB leading 50 - 47. In the 4th the Bze Bank team defense held UB to their lowest points per quarter and outscored them 16 - 11 to win the game. Travis Lennon got fouled with 1 sec remaining in the game for a chance to send it into overtime, but he missed the first. He then intentionally missed the second and Stephen 'Muerte' Williams also had a chance to tie the game but missed the putback at the buzzer. The championship trophies and individual awards were presented in a ceremony after the second game. |
