National Health Insurance – NHI – so important to the little
people, most especially in the cases of those expensive tests. Even with all the unwarranted opposition by
the UDP it was implemented by PM Musa.
It was one of the cornerstones in the progressive PUP terms in the last
ten years.
But as is always the case – because it was one of the PUP’s Manifesto promises successfully implemented – and having touched the lives of so many, to the vindictive and petty UDP, it must go. Anything that helps the most needy, the UDP gets rid of. Isn’t it a shame? How did Pablo Marin, the new Minister of Health say it? DOA (dead on arrival!) How irresponsible of him to joke and toss aside such a worthy idea! Equal access to quality healthcare is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The UDP seem to want two-tier healthcare, one for the rich and one for the rest of us. Barrow, Finnegan, Faber, and the rest of them can benefit from tertiary care in Belize. Why can’t we?Having realized that there would have been severe public backlash, the Cabinet apparently reversed its position. The announcement was that Barrow would ask the IDB to fund NHI. So is the insurance scheme on life-support? Well like all things UDP, the truth is at a half-way house. Under the PUP the IDB had already agreed to provide funds for human development, under which the NHI would have gotten an injection of finance. Barrow knows this, but he has instructed his propaganda secretary to put the usual spin on the story. Today Delaray – Delaroy – Delatoy whatever his name is (but it is the same Cuthkelvin ) who went to the previous Prime Minister Musa cap in hand begging for a job because he was destitute and his UDP cronies had turned their backs on him – yes, today that same Cuthkelvin, operating from the same office he had worked in when the PUP were in government (one of the many proofs that the PUP did NOT victimize – rather they embraced all), made the announcement that PM Barrow would be flying to Miami to ask the IDB for a loan he says for NHI. Well, the truth of the matter is that that IDB loan he’ll probably smilingly take credit for was successfully negotiated by the previous administration. It is a soft loan the PUP pursued to advance Human Development – in health, in education – in projects that would touch the lives of so many of our people. All Barrow has to do when he flies North is sign and smile and take credit for something he had absolutely nothing to do with. But we won’t protest. Use the money for NHI. We need it. And stop playing politics with our healthcare. P.S. I would be remiss if I did not allude here to that article written shortly after the elections by Cadet Henderson in which he cited so many of the wonderful project ideas that he would implement. Again, those projects were ready to be started – funding was in place – every single one of them was way past idea stage. But you, Cadet, you deliberately held them up. Why? To hurt your then Minister and the then government and you did, so your mission was accomplished – but in the final analysis, you hurt the people more. So get to them, Cadet; make believe that these ideas come from you and the U.D.P. Just get the job done and stop profiling. It is INCREDIBLE the lengths they will go…. |
