“I want to lead a PUP with unity and equality,” promised the Hon John Briceño, minutes before his election victory this past March 30, 2008, as the new leader of People’s United Party. And true to his word, the new party leader has put this pledge central to his leadership, heralding a new beginning in the life of the PUP.

The work of unifying the Party began immediately after the changing of the guard on Sunday following a short campaign in which the new replaced the old and in which change won.

Magnanimous in victory, the new Party Leader met early with Hon Francis Fonseca and former party leader Hon Said Musa to reaffirm his conviction to reunite and strengthen the PUP. The matter of the expulsion of Hon Mark Espat is now off the table and the role of Lake I Representative Hon. Cordel Hyde in the new PUP, both with whom he is consulting, is critical to the process of rebuilding and reorganizing the PUP.

The politics of inclusion and not exclusion was the rallying cry among all party supporters.

The new party leader will embark in national consultations to heal and unify the PUP. He plans to meet all party officials and supporters and bring them back to the big blue tent where every party supporter has an equal place and where new blood is welcome. He similarly plans to meet all those who placed their trust in him and seek their continued backing in the task ahead.

The active participation of women and the youth in the national executive of the PUP will bring freshness and diversity to the new PUP. The other organs of the party and the caucuses will be revived. A review of the Party’s Constitution is planned to adapt to the new realities to make it more representative and inclusive.

Briceño’s call for more openness also struck the right cord among the thousands of supporters still recovering from the crushing defeat of the Party on February 7th. Briceno’s conciliatory tone and his own brand of politics will undoubtedly win the hearts and minds and the confidence of those party supporters who lost faith in the PUP.

The Party Leader is moving quickly to put his own imprint on the leadership of the PUP to bring about the necessary changes to revitalize the party. And even as he works to unify the party, Briceño won on a platform of meaningful change – change in the interest of the party and country. Change that will require tough and difficult decisions.

The path ahead is not without its challenges, but the new leader is ready and resolute to fix and return the party to its motto of Serve the People. And he is ready to take on the ultimate challenge of the real enemy, the defeat of the UDP. It is an exciting time, filled with promise, confidence and optimism of a better future.
