Lately a lot has been said by mischief-makers about the
ownership of the BELIZE TIMES, casting uncertainty about the loyalty of the
longest serving newspaper in Belize.
For the record, since the early 50s the BELIZE TIMES and
Independence Hall on #3 Queen Street were assets owned by the Price Estate.
In the case of the BELIZE TIMES other shareholders later
invested in the business. Over the years, private funds were expended to buy
the interests of the Price Estate when the estate resettled in favour of the
beneficiaries. Private funds were also used to rebuild and refurbish the
property following a disastrous fire that destroyed the structure in a politically
motivated attack.
Throughout history,
the owners of the BELIZE TIMES and Independence Hall have never used the assets
other than for the benefit of and in support of the People’s United Party. Even
today, with a new PUP leader, the owners maintain their pledge to continue
supporting the People’s United Party and defending the peaceful, constructive
Belizean revolution. That shall continue to be our objective.
The BELIZE TIMES is not for sale.
