Independence Village, April 26, 2008 - The Tex Mar Boys of Independence Village brought the national football championship home to Independence when they won Game 2 of the finals 3-0 over Benque DC United in the 1st Belize Bank Superleague Tournament at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium on Saturday night, April 26.
Tex Mar boys win 2008 Super League Football Tournament Albert Eiley and Freddy Cruz tried to get the Cayo visitors back in the game, but Tex Mar’s Arnold Torres and goalie Stephen Lopez took a hand in things and the Independence squad held on to their 1-zip lead up to the half time break.
Goalie Stephen Lopez was alert Wilbur Garcia had an open look at goal to make it 2-zip but he squandered the opportunity by sending the ball outside the sticks. Not to fear, Mervin Leslie did it again when he connected with a header on a corner kick by Arnold Torres and placed the ball beyond Willi Luna’s grasp for Goal No.2 in the 62nd minute.
Mervin Lopez was brilliant in the finals Tex Mar’s brilliant Brazilian Marcos Souto set table again for Wilbur Garcia to make it 3-zip but again Garcia bungled the opportunity. The boys in green from Cayo were still trying to get on the scoreboard when Gilmore Palacio sealed the win with Goal No.3 in the 82nd minute and that was the score 3-zip at the final whistle. Tex Mar Boys claimed the $20,000 first prize and trophy for their win, while Benque DC United got the $10,000 2nd prize. |
