Esperanza Village, May 4, 2008 - Defending national women’s football champs Gentle Touch of
Esperanza opened a can of whup-ass on Belmopan’s Cruz Azul for a 5-1 win in
their 1st game of the 2008 competition at the Esperanza football field on
Sunday.
The competition opened on Saturday when Emmanuel of Orange
Walk held Millennium of Belize City to a 3-3 draw at the People’s Stadium on
Saturday.
Cynthia Salazar put the champs on the scoreboard first when she blasted the first goal past Cruz Azul’s goalie Anna Ramirez. Abby Halliday soon added a 2nd goal for the ‘Ranza’ squad, but when the ‘Ranza goalie Eden Gentle misplayed a ball in the goal area, Cruz Azul’s Elizabeth Galdamez made her pay by blasting the ball into the net to get some in for the visitors. It was to be their only consolation goal, as ‘Ranza’s ‘brazilian’ Kimberly Perez outstripped the Cruz Azul defenders Sonia Rivera, Claudia Membreno, and Esther and Mimi Cal to drive in a 3rd and a 4th goals for Gentle Touch to hold a 4-1 lead at the half time break.
Gentle Touch team The Gentle Touch midfielders: Jasmine, Jolene and Vashne Gentle continued to break up the Cruz Azul plays in midfield and forward the ball to their strikers, but it was late in the ball game when Abby Halliday got in a 5th goal past Anna Ramirez for the 5-1 win.
Abby Halliday scored Gentle Touch's 2nd & 5th goals The visitors had one chance to pick up a second goal when the referee awarded them a penalty, but Myra Galdamez’s powder-puff attempt to convert presented no challenge for Eden Gentle. In Orange Walk on Saturday, Samantha Carlos scored 2 goals as they held the Millennium girls to a 3-3 draw. Shinelle Gentle scored the visitors’ 1st goal, Mercedes Choc scored their 2nd goal and veteran defender Helen Flowers drove in the visitors’ 3rd goal before the half time break to equalize 3-3. The Sugar City girls failed to get another goal in the second half, but stopped the visitors’ attacks to preserve the 3-3 draw until the long whistle. The completion continues as Emmanuel visits Cruz Azul in Belmopan on Saturday, May 10 while Millennium will host Hidden Treasures of Pomona on Sunday at the MCC Garden and the Delille Pumas will await Gentle Touch at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga also on Sunday. |
