Belize City, April 21st 2008 -Sky-rocketing flour prices have Governments scrambling for
cheaper supply sources. That is the situation faced by the Government of
Antigua and Barbuda who announced two weeks ago that Belize is being considered
as an alternate source of flour supply to buffer the rising cost.
The most reasonable supplier would be Trinidad and Tobago, but the price of flour from that country has since risen by approximately 40 per cent. Dr. Cort added that Belize and Guyana were also being considered. But Belize Mills, Belize’s sole flour producer, has informed the BELIZE TIMES that at this time it would be impossible for them to produce flour for export.
ADM Belize Mills The reasons cited were Belize Mill’s incapacity to produce that much flour and their inability to incur the shipping costs that are also going sky high as a result of rising oil prices. In addition, Belize’s flour prices were below average at the time Dr. Cort made his announcement. Last week those prices soared by 42%, bringing it on par with high prices across the region. News update: Last Friday, Dr. Cort announced that a flour supplier in Guyana had agreed to sell Antigua and Barbuda flour at approximately $14 less per 100 lb sack than was being offered by the mill in St. Vincent & the Grenadines. The agreement is that Guyana will sell at the fixed price for the next six months. |
