Dear Editor,
Just 2 months and 2 weeks after the General Elections and the people of Belize are feeling the cold, hardened, unapologetic victimization of the UDP Government. In Cayo it seems to be out of control. Cayo Northeast representative, Elvin Penner, is manifesting his authority in totalitarian fashion (do as you are told, no questions asked, I am supreme authority) while testing the patience of the Hispanic communities in his division. His attempt at changing all Water Boards in the villages is failing due to strong reaction from the village councils and the villagers themselves. In the village of Los Tambos, his five appointed members are the only villagers that reportedly still have debts with the Water Board. How can Penner expect a water board to be managed by people who fail to contribute their share in the development of the village? In Cayo Central, all members of the Seven Miles/Progresso Village Council were arrested and taken to the San Ignacio Police Station. Rene Montero chose to take sides with a foreigner instead of the Seven Miles community over a land dispute. Cayo North is dead. The people are angry and disappointed. More so by the fact that the area representative Salvador Fernandez did not get his Prime Minister to give him a portfolio in Cabinet despite being one of the more senior and experienced winners in the last elections. Occupied with taking away jobs from PUPs and giving to his cronies and spending much more time gambling, Cayo North is perceived to be doomed. The Prime Minister mentioned that he makes no apologies for the hundreds of PUP supporters being fired. This comes as no surprise as they live to the well known and despised "PUP HIRE-UDP FIRE" propaganda. But what is despicable is when you remove the poor ladies that change the sheets and clean the rooms at the hospital, when you threaten to remove the man that does the executioner's job at the morgue and replace him with someone who is even afraid of going into the morgue. Worst of all for Cayo is the fact that while we are trying to protect our children from various forms of crime, the UDP appoint a fishy character as the new Sports Coordinator. The sports coordinator is responsible for sporting activities in all Primary Schools. How can this kind of person be given such a position? We all heard the call to LOVE FM by the School Principal of Esperanza village, asking for assistance of the police and the community to apprehend the people who are constantly breaking into the Primary School and stealing their equipment. The principal was not calling names but she knows fully well who sells the drugs to these thieves who steal to sell their stolen goods for a pittance so as to maintain their habits. What a web we weave! What is up with Cayo West? Will Mayor Marconi Sosa still resign after sending his letter to Prime Minister Dean Barrow? Marconi wants as much money in grants as Barrow gives to the San Ignacio Town Council. He only gets a fraction and is totally displeased with his Prime Minister. After being told that he has to spend more time doing the Mayoral work and not be employed in the private sector, the Mayor also pointed at the San Ignacio Mayor who does not appear in office for days at a time. This has heightened the prospects of former UDP disqualified Mayor Alfonso Cruz to announce his decision to contest the UDP Mayoral convention in the twin towns. What neither the Mayors from Benque nor the twin towns are doing is taking care of the western sanitary Landfill. The site is a disgrace. Every two months or so the garbage reaches the highway and then it is burned. Burning probably saves them from spending on a land-fill but it is an environmental nuisance and it’s currently getting the tourists in the nearby resorts and residents of Benque Viejo very sick. The department of environment should intervene and so should public health. The problem is nothing new. It commenced since the UDP Town Council took office in 2003 and the problem has not been remedied to date. Mr. Barrow, please look at Cayo. The elections are over. Why continue punishing all of us? Signed, Cayo Concerned Citizens |
