As we move towards May1st, we pause to observe the huge
dimensional global development that has changed societies of the world. It does
not matter from which point you look at it, it could well be through the lenses
of a third world country with social indicators of inequality such as ours, or
a pretentious first world player. Everything seems to be pointing in the same
direction at this time: to crush the concept protest and to stigmatize any
discourse that may vent the minimum social accent. We could blame the huge
transnational businesses in great part for having succeeded in propelling the
process of globalization over the years, with their objective to undo the
territorial boundaries which have achieved the dreams of Simon Bolivar, only in
the reversed. An America seemingly united but with unspeakable inequality,
influenced only to surrender their most valuable natural resources.
Societies have gradually gone silent and values such as
respect and human dignity and the defense of human rights or civil liberties
have all been superseded by the supreme right of big capital that favors all
forms of popular repression.
In Belize, workers can no longer look forward or depend on any true type of representation by Trade Unions as they have turned out to be two headed vipers. All busy acting on two fronts with two faces, confusing the workers with their every turn. During the last few years, they have openly indulged in politics than in the areas they were called upon to represent. This has eliminated all forms of credibility towards the trade unions of Belize. The voices of the common man no longer have an echo with this regard because most of the Unions of Belize have transformed themselves into a huge slot machine. May 1st is known throughout the greater world as Labor Day, the “Worker’s Day”, this is only symbolic today with no major impact in the economic sphere since the main strings that control the unions are pulled by the hands of the major transnational businesses or in the case of Belize, they are in the pockets of a few wealthy politicians presently in government. Today, the new Government acts and does as it pleases with no fear of reprisals from the Unions, they carry out massive retrenchment shielding behind the mandate that they claim were to “clean house”. No regard for the dignity of workers who have families to maintain. The Government has stopped social and health programmes with no regard for the poor who needs these programmes. Unions of this country are looking the other way while one gets trampled upon and give a deaf ear to everything wrong that is exploding before them. This is what is causing the majority to be silenced. Maybe at some point the gap between the rich and the poor will be balanced and fall into symmetry when it is realized that capital is nothing without labor force. Today, workers prefer to keep silent and resign to the free space where they use to vent their thoughts and opinions and they choose to do so over the danger of losing their daily bread. Our Union Representatives are too busy representing themselves while the oppression continues. Sometime ago, we also had a “concerned” media that used to dedicate themselves to record thoughts and opinions, ideologies that were brought out in public to be discussed, always finding a just way to design a common future for all. Today, that future seems to be marked by voracity of a few and deterioration of lives of the majority. Add as favourites (8) | Views: 75 | Print | E-mail
