ImageBelize City, June 11, 2008 - As if cost of living isn’t already soaring beyond the reach of many Belizeans, a GOB release dated June 10th has thrown fuel on the fire, pardon the pun. The cost per 100 pound cylinder of butane has risen yet again, the second time in as many weeks.

The explanation given by the Government of Belize, citing rising acquisition and freight costs, is little or no consolation for the many thousands of Belizeans who will now have to dig deeper in their pockets which have already been depleted, thanks to this new UDP administration.

This increase will affect not only homeowners cooking for their families, but also small snack shops, eateries and restaurants in every sector of society. From tacos, meat pies and panades to sirloin and prime ribs (for the few who can now afford it), the price will go up.

At the BELIZE TIMES, we’ll be feeling the pinch with just about everyone else, and we suggest that the next time you see your UDP Area Representative driving past in their fancy SUVs, wave them down and ask about the promise they made only a few months ago – a promise that the price of butane would immediately go down if the UDP was elected.
