BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Oct. 30, 2008 - The Police investigation of a shooting incident which they believe was in retaliation for another shooting in which Dillon Bennett was killed has resulted in the arrest of Darren Banks, 30 and Steven Zelaya, 33, both residents of 4100 Oleander Street.

Banks and Zelaya were charged with 2 counts of attempted murder when they appeared in the #1 Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 27.

Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie explained to them that the Court could not offer them bail because of the nature of the offence. She remanded them into custody until November 27.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 23.

Three men - Alex Myers, Richard Russell and Lucius Myers – were walking out of Pine Street and going on to Central American Boulevard.

Alex Myers and Richard Russell, residents of Mayflower Street, reported to the police that when they reached the corner of Central American Boulevard and Banak Street, they saw a green Saturn car coming towards them.

They said that when the car drove past the taco stand on Central American Boulevard, it stopped and a man of fair complexion jumped out with a pistol in his right hand and began to run towards them, firing several shots as he did so.

Myers and Russell said they ran and they were unhurt.

Apparently Lucius Myers, who was also shot at, has not yet given a statement to the Police, so Banks and Zelaya were only charged with 2 counts of attempted murder.
