They began their campaign for the general elections the way
it will come to and end: With a Big Lie.
To say that Belize’s public debt is $3 billion is the Billion dollar lie of the century. What Dean Barrow and the UDP cannot comprehend is how Prime Minister Said Musa and the PUP were able in the face of all adversity to restructure 98% of the public sector commercial debts in February which will save an estimated US$100 million in 2007 and another US$50 million in 2008 in cash flow. What they cannot understand is how the Prime Minister was able to convert almost the entire commercial debt to a long-term repayment spread over 22 years with NO principal payments due before 2019 (12 years from now) at a much reduced interest rate starting at 4.25% for the next three years. By this successful restructuring Belize’s debt service profile has been transformed, providing a stable and sustainable growth platform well into the future. The Barrow boast that he would have been the chosen one to bring about the recovery has been shattered by the PUP pre-emptive strike. And now that the economy is continuing to show healthy growth with robust investments in the tourism sector and increase in agricultural production and export earnings, the once cocky Barrow and his financial advisors Esquivel and Vasquez are in panic mode. As the saying goes, one week is a long time in politics. Seven months must seem like an eternity for the desperate power-hungry opposition. They have tried every malevolent scheme imaginable to bring down the Government by undemocratic means - preaching hate and violence - calling for sustained civil disobedience which resulted in riots and arson, destruction of electricity poles, causing blackouts, destruction of fiber-optic cables cutting off the country’s telecommunications from the rest of the world. They use and abuse the airwaves and the internet to spread filthy lies and slander. But Said Musa and the PUP would not be moved. The work goes on. Building class rooms, expanding opportunities, delivering the services to the people in urban and rural communities – light, water, telephone, better roads, new health facilities, expansion of the airport, sea-port, sports facilities, a resurgence of cultural activities. The tables are turning. The wind of change is blowing. And is blowing again in favour of the People’s United Party. Which is why Barrow-Esquivel-Vasquez are in panic mode. And rightly so, too. For the PUP is going to win- again- in 2008. |
