Adelina Humes, 37, mother of two, is the lucky winner
Belize City, Wed. Apr. 15, 2009 - Adelina Humes, 37, mother of two, is the lucky winner. This morning, a tearful and happy Adelina was presented with a check for $145,000 at the Lotto Headquarters on Queen Street.

Adelina told the BELIZE TIMES that she was overjoyed when she listened to Love FM and heard her numbers being called out. By the time they rounded the third number she was very nervous and shaking, said Adelina. When it was over, she could not believe that she had all five numbers, 6-15-16-22-23. She recognized the numbers immediately because they were a set of quick pick she had purchased the previous Saturday for that day’s drawing. When they did not play, for some strange reason she had the feeling to rebuy the same numbers from the quick pick she had bought for Saturday.

She is not a regular buyer, said Adelina and normally she would not repurchase a quick pick. She just had so say “Thank God” when she won, said Adelina, fighting back the tears that was coming along with her bright smile.

Adelina, who lives in Buttercup village along the Burrell Boom road, said that she has constructive planes for her money. She is certain that she will do something in honor of her sister, who passed away four years ago. It is not something she wishes to share as yet and would like to keep it private, she said. Since the passing of her sister, she has taken up the responsibility of being a mother to her two children, a girl, age 12 and a boy age 14. Her two kids, ages 8 and 5 were along with her as well as her niece and nephew when she collected her check.

She sat down with the kids after winning and they decided that she would go in to claim her prize when she was comfortable. The following day after Lotto played was the Holy Thursday and then the long weekend came. The time allowed her to sit down and decided exactly what she would do with the winnings.

After taxes, Adelina takes home a check for $123,000.

And so like the first lotto winner for 2009 who had taken in four of her mother-in-law’s kids after her passing, Adelina was blessed with good fortune.
