Belize City, August 1, 2009

sports-dellele-pumus.jpgDefending champs Gentle Touch of Esperanza will host the Delille Pumas for Game 1 of the national women’s football championship finals in Esperanza on Saturday, August 8, after Pumas posted their 2nd win over Millennium girls of Belize City and Gentle Touch drew 2-2 with the Belize Defense force in Game 2 of the semifinals at the MCC garden last Saturday.

The Millennium girls sought to avenge their 5-2 loss to the Pumas at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Game 1 and Kursha Pollard and Geanny Cayetano took the game to the Pumas from the getgo, supported by Cheyenne Waller and Ermilda Acosta on the wings. Samira Acosta, Kara Kisling and Adelma Broaster backed up their game at midfield.

But they had no answer to the Pumas’ star striker Nykemah Kuylen who picked up forward passes from her defenders: Jackiva Murillo, Patricia Marin and Carmita Swaso, and ran thru the city girls defense to embarrass Millennium goalie Ermine Ferguson with the first goal and then a 2nd goal to lead 2-0 at the half time break.

Pumas’ Dorita Ramos, Twila Castillo, Ashanti Velasquez, Sharlen Nunez and Cindy Flores all pressed the Griga dang girls offensive into the millennium half of the field in the 2nd half. Millennium’s Helen Flowers, Kara Kisling and Melony Tasher had their work cut out holding off the Pumas from scoring more goals, but they failed to score and the long whistle sounded to a 2-0 win for the Delille Pumas.

The Gentle Touch girls had looked forward to a repeat of their 4-0 blast in Game 1, but no such luck, it was the BDF’s Tracy “Baby” White who drew first blood and the Esperanza strikers, Kimberly Perez, Abby Halliday and Indira Spain were stung into a furious counterattack that finally produced the equalizer goal by Abby Halliday before the half time break.

Esperanza’s midfielders Christy and Tanisha Tillett, Dina Bennett and Joleen Gentle brought it on in the 2nd half, but again it was the BDF who scored first, when Cynthia Salazar embarrassed goalie Eden Gentle with a 2nd goal for the Army women.

The BDF defenders Araceli Lambey, Monique Grant and Karla Flores broke up the Gentle touch attacks as they tried to secure the 2-1 win, but Kimberly Perez succeeded in driving in a 2nd goal for Esperanza to equalize 2-2 before the long whistle.

Gentle Touch advances to the final by a 6-2 win on goal aggregate.
