Australian
national Cesare Fermino Daniele, 45, a resident of Placencia who allegedly
defrauded Chen Yin Hseih, the owner of Red Hut Inn in Placencia, was charged
with 4 counts of obtaining property by deception when he appeared yesterday in
the #3 Magistrate’s Court. Daniele pled not guilty to the charge. Magistrate
Tracy Sosa denied him bail and remanded him into custody until September 7
because his immigration status in Belize could not be ascertained.
The
incident occurred between June 20 and July 13 and Hseih told Police that she
was defrauded of $5,860 US currency. On August 3, Hseih reported to the Police
that on June 9 she and Daniele, a guest at her business place, began talking
and he convinced her that he was a time-share salesman for Vacation Packages
Online. She said Daniele asked her for her account number so that he could
deposit funds into her account from his clients’ credit cards.
She
told Police that she gave him the account number and on June 20 $1,750 US
currency was deposited into her account at Atlantic Bank. Two days later she
gave Daniele $321 Belize currency after she deducted payment for her Inn from
Daniele, she said. Hseih said that on June 29, $1,710 US currency was deposited
in her account and she gave Daniele a cheque for $2,710 Belize currency. On
June 28, $1,600 US currency was deposited into Hseih’s account. She told Police
that she gave Daniele a cheque for $1,664 Belize currency. Then on July 13,
$800 US currency was deposited into Hseih’s account and she gave Daniele $1,310
Belize currency, she said.
On August 3 Hseih found out that the bank deducted all the money deposited into
her account because the transactions were fraudulent and the clients had
demanded that their money be refunded. The Police investigated Hseih’s report
and arrested and charged Daniele.
