For over 23 years, Alex Meat Shop,
located at the Old Farmer’s Market, has been in existence. Laura Dawson is the
owner and she told the Belize Times more about the meat shop.
When she first opened in 1986, she
got that same location and has been there since. She saw a market for meat and
being a village woman, she knew about animals and the meat they provide. She
started purchasing beef and pork from the Mennonites. As has been the norm
since then the price of meat has fluctuated. It all depends on the
availability, she explained.
She still buys from
the Mennonites. Among the many meats she sells is tripes, lites, cow foot,
brisket, beef ribs, stew beef, pork chops, pork ribs, grind pork, sirloin,
ground, grind round and shoulder steaks, beef shank and liver.
When asked how she would encourage
another Belizean to get into business as she has done, she said, “You must
first realize that you can’t get rich overnight. A business is a process. What
you sell the first day is not your profit. Not even what you sell the second
day is your profit. You must wait until the end of the week to see what has
been made. Still you do not spend the profit made. You would have to put aside
some money made for the following week, just in case business is not as good
the following week as it was the present week.”
“Honestly, I truly believe that a
person needs to be educated before they get into their own business in order
for it to be successful.”
The meat shop is opened from Monday
through Friday from 8:00a.m. – 6:00 p.m. On Saturdays you can get your meat
from 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 in the afternoon. Add as favourites (18) | Views: 1142 | Print | E-mail
