Dalton Pou is a hard-working man who has been selling food for over 22 years. He had stopped for about a year when he visited the United States, but on his return he had to resort to what he knew best – working for himself.

The BELIZE TIMES met Pou selling his regular dish - rice and beans, chicken and salad, under the Old Farmer’s Market at the foot of Belcan Bridge. He is always seated just outside Alex Meat Shop.

He grew up around restaurants, Pou said. When he was a boy, his father had a restaurant named Pou Restaurant on Water Lane. That was way back in the 40’s. He did not give up restaurants until 1963, when he stopped and closed the restaurant.

That was when Pou became interested. He had seen what the business had done for his father and knew that he could benefit the very same way. He had his very first restaurant when he was in his early 20’s. That one was in Dangriga. He later moved to Corozal where he had another restaurant, keeping his father’s name, Pou’s Restaurant. His third restaurant was in Orange Walk where he also lived for some years before he took up residence in Belize City. He never got into the official restaurant business here, but still did his cooking. Every morning, he would do his preparations and go in front of Rene’s Store on Cemetery Road, where he would sell his food.

When he left Belize and came back though, someone had already gotten that location, so he had to find another prime location where he would be able to get his food sold. That is when he got the spot in front of Alex Meat Shop.

He loves cooking. More so, he loves making his own money. Having your own business requires dedication and patience, he says, but if you make up your mind, you will be successful.

His prices start at $4.00. Pou is at the Farmer’s Market from Monday thru Friday from around 10:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
