Two women, Christy Mejia, 19 and
Adelita Aranda, 30 who bit each other in a fight, were both charged with
grievous harm. Mejia, a UB student of Croton Lane, was arraigned on the charge
on Tuesday, August 18. She was released on bail of $2,000 and she was told to
return to Court on October 14. Aranda, a domestic worker of Jasmin Street, was
arraigned on the charge the same day. She too was released on bail of $2,000
and was told to return to Court on October 14.
Aranda
said that it was Mejia who attacked her on Sunday, August 16 while she was
passing home from a visit to her cousin. The fight, she said, was because of a
man. According to Aranda, Mejia struck her on the left side of her body with a
piece of stick and then they both got into a struggle. During the struggle,
Mejia, she said, bit off piece of the flesh under her chin and she retaliated
by biting off a piece of Mejia’s right ear. Mejia, she said, also bit her on
her left ear.
Mejia and Aranda were taken to the
Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they were both treated and released. The
doctor who examined and treated them classified their injuries as grievous
harm.
