The Lady Rebels were invincible as they won the Belize Softball Federation’s 2009 national women’s softball championships held at the Rogers Stadium in Belize City over the weekend. The Rebels walloped Camalote’s Cristal Parrot 12-3 in the championship finale on Sunday afternoon to win their first ever national title. In Game 1 Friday night, Telemedia’s pitcher Mary Flowers led the Telemedia girls to an 8-1 win against Camalote Cristal Parrot, with Shandi Orellano pitching. In Game 2 also on Friday night, Grace Kennedy’s pitcher Leandra Guy led the Cayo district champions, the Roaring Creek girls to a 9-7 win against the Belize rural sub-champions, the Flowers Bank Easy Does It girls. In Game 3 on Saturday morning pitcher Carla Humes led Lady Rebels in a 5-2 upset of defending champs, Telemedia, with Mary Flowers pitching for Telemedia. In Game 4, pitcher Leandra Guy led the Grace Kennedy girls to a 2nd win, 9-1 against the Belize rural champs, the Sand Hill Sluggers. The Roaring Creek girls hit 9 runs off Sheraine Westby’s pitching In Game 5, the Camalote Cristal Parrot girls got over their losing slump as pitcher Shandi Orellano struck out the Sluggers for a 15-3 win. In Game 6, the Flowers Bank Easy Does It girls toughed it out for an 8-7 win to give Telemedia their ticket home. In Game 7, pitcher Lanisha Jones led Lady Rebels to their 2nd win as they whopped Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy 5-2, forcing the Roaring Creek girls into a playoff with Camalote Cristal Parrot. In Game 8, the Cristal Parrot girls sent home the Easy Does It girls by a 14-2 win. In Game 9 on Sunday morning, Cristal Parrot eliminated the Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy girls 5-0, led by pitcher Shandi Orellano who struck out 9 batters and gave up 2 hits. Nafeesa Gentle scored 2 runs to lead the Cristal Parrot girls to the 5-0 win to qualify them to the final. In Game 10, the grand finale, Sophie Smith scored the Lady Rebels’ 1st run in the 1st inning, but Camalote Cristal Parrot took over the lead 2-1 when Shanice Williams and Nafeesa Gentle came home in the bottom of the first. The Lady Rebels led again 6-2 when Janelle Smith, Ashanti Anderson, Lanisha Jones, Sophie Smith and Marsha Will came home in the 2nd inning and Janelle Smith came home in the 3rd inning to give them a 7-1 lead. Tamira Orellano scored Camalote’s 3rd run in the 3rd inning, but that was all she wrote for the Cristal Parrot girls as Lanisha Jones took over the pitching for Lady Rebels and shut out the Camalote girls for the rest of the game. Lady Rebels’ Sharette Vernon, Janelle Smith, Anderson Sharette Jones and Lanisha came home in the 6th inning, and the mercy rule was applied giving Lady Rebels a12-3 win. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners received medals and team trophies, while outstanding players received individual awards in the closing ceremonies. The Most Valuable Player, Lanisha Jones, also won the award for the Best Pitcher with the most wins: 2-0. Camalote’s Shandi Orellano won Most Strikeouts: 22; Shanice Williams won Most Stolen Bases: 3 and Samantha Casey the Most Home Runs award.
