It is said that the family that prays together stays together. Well! It is my belief that a family that can work together prospers together. That’s the situation with the Hinds family which is from Orange Walk Town but comes to Belize every week to work.

Angela Hinds, who sits behind a stall at the Queen Square Primary School from Monday thru Fridays, told us that the business was actually started by her husband, Robert Hinds, who is now retired from the street work and works only at the farm in Orange Walk Town. They used to bring in bulk for sale at the Queen Square Market and one day decided to check and see what would be the results if they should try and sell in front of a school. “Maybe, just maybe it might bring in more income,” they thought.

What was just a trial and failure measure turned out to be successful and so they stuck with the idea and since then the couple has been joined by their son, Francis Hinds. In the beginning they sold only from in front of Queen Square Primary School and later made checks and began selling from in front of St. Ignatius Primary School, located just around the bend from Queen Square. That was where the father would sell from. That is now Francis’ location.

The family now sells everything you can think of in the line of fruit. They also sell sweets, kasham, ice and tableta. Everything is available in bags for $0.25. The only item you’ll pay $0.50 for is the ice.

Every Monday morning they would come to Belize from Orange Walk with their bulk of fruits that is harvested from their farm. She and Francis would stay in Hattieville so that they don’t have to commute on a daily basis. If any of the fruits they bring run out, they would re-buy at the market for sale purposes so that they don’t have to travel again and spend more money on the bus commute.

The Hinds family can be found at their stalls from 7:30 until 4:00 from Monday to Friday.
