When a child has a dream at a very early age and actually accomplishes that dream, you know that it is someone who has “their heads screwed on right”. They know exactly what they want from life and will stop at nothing to get it. That’s the story of Krystal Gladden, who owns and operates Kristy’s Beauty Salon, located at #6 Cemetery Road, just next to Little Melchor and two buildings down from the Salvation Army Primary School. The BELIZE TIMES sat down with Kristy who told us how as a child it gave her joy to comb hair and invent her very own hairstyles, even taking scissors and cutting her doll’s hair. She says that since that age, whenever there was an occasion where she could receive gifts, she would request items that she knew would help her in her vocation - nail polish, a stand, hair dryer, curling iron - whatever she thought would be an asset to her salon. She even had her savings that she would use to purchase her items. The bulk of her equipment she got when she started taking classes at Alma’s Beauty School, though, where many women in Belize have learnt the trade. When she first opened, Kristy operated from the lower flat of her home, located at the back of the salon. She had it neatly attired. Ever since that time, Kristy was someone who always had a smile on her face and would charge a very reasonable price to get that neat look. Besides getting those nice hairstyles, you can also get your hair perms and get those arched up-do’s that give you that elegant princess look, fit to enter any ballroom. She also does manicures for $20.00, pedicures for $30.00, acrylics, facials for $25.00, wash, perms, set, color, and rinses. Working in her salon with her is a young lady Mara Hernandez who does the neat up-do’s and braids. Kristy is someone who never stops inventing. Today she cast out one of the most amazing ideas I’ve heard with which she promises to thrill Belizeans! For now though she will keep it “hush-hush”.
