There have been a lot of arguments over if Belize is a good
country, or not. While some argue for the idea, others are against it. There
are even those who are in between. Usually it’s the opposition that says that
Belize is not a good country. That has to do more with politics than anything
else. The UDP doesn’t not want to give the PUP credit for anything- ergo their
contention that Belize is not a good country. But politics aside,
realistically, whichever way you look at it, Belize is tremendously a good
country.
A good country is not necessarily where everyone is rich.
But it is a country where anyone can become anybody if they want to, and know
how. A good country is not a country where the government necessarily creates
opportunities for people, or offers it to them. But it is a country where the
government creates a climate conducive to spur, nurture and sustain development
and enterprise. This includes creating the right type of platform that
encourages competitiveness, and the protection of choices.
A good country is one where the right of the individual to choose to personally affect the direction of one's own destiny is jealously protected. It is one in which the rights of women and children are given priority. A good country is also one that is endowed with natural resources that individuals have the leverage and access to develop. It is one that protects freedom of the press. In it, the rights of individuals to free speech is guarded jealously. The best way to save our country is not to lose sight of the wonderful privileges, and benefits it accords us all. Politicians may attempt to reconstruct realities to make everything good to look bad. Any government may do what they can do, but the final responsibility to be who we want to, and can be, will depend on us as individuals. The PUP government has created the right environment and climate to support entrepreneurial-ship and professional pursuits. It obviously now depends on individuals to place their hands on the plough and take responsibilities for their own destiny. Indeed the government has pledged to continue relentlessly to make sure that no one falls through the cracks, and that the indigents are not forgotten. Let us all join hands as one people in this effort to build and sustain our good country, Belize. |
