On Saturday, September 29th, the People’s United Party entered its 58th year of serving Belize. “Serve the People.” That has been the motto of the PUP since its inception. It has also been the driving force behind the peaceful, constructive, Belizean revolution that has allowed us to determine for ourselves (self-determination) the path we take to greatness, as a people and as a nation. The story of the PUP is a testament of struggle and achievement: the struggle to free ourselves from the shackles of colonialism and the achievement of political independence. Today, the struggle continues, as it always will, as we strive for economic independence. The revolution lives on; it has adapted to changing political times and global economics, while still holding firm to the goal of ensuring that every Belizean receives a fair share of national wealth and a continuously improving quality of life.

In all parts of Belize, PUP constituency committees organized grass roots social events to commemorate the anniversary. On Friday, members of the Marshalls Community Service Corp gathered at Independence Hall to talk politics and rekindle the camaraderie that they developed as extraordinary members of the PUP.

On the Party’s birthday, it is the people, the supporters that must celebrate, for the political organization called the PUP is but the embodiment of a revolutionary idea, the grouping of a people who with vision and determination have and will continue to build Belize.

In all districts the people celebrated. There were sports events, musical events and community upliftment projects. The Party Leader, the Rt. Hon. Said Musa, traveled to Xaibe in the afternoon to take part in the annual march through the village, ending at the football field, where Area Representative for Corozal North, Valdemar Castillo, along with his colleagues in the North organized a quadrangular football tournament.

From there the Prime Minister moved on to Orange Walk Town, where there was a gathering of thousands of enthusiastic PUP supporters, who came out to pay tribute and celebrate in the unity and strength of the PUP. They marched through the streets of the Sugar City, waving the blue and white flags and shouting “PUP All the Way!” from Liberty Avenue to the Banquitas House of Culture, sending a clear message to the Opposition that the people believe in the PUP and believe in Belize.

The birthday celebration also signaled the launch of the PUP Orange Walk general election campaign, and as Deputy Party Leader, Hon. John Briceno, said, “I can tell you that I am a proud PUP, as are all of you, right? We must be proud of our Party and we must be ready to support our candidates to ensure victory for the PUP. We have had enough of the UDP. We are ready and we are united.”

In this, our 58th year, the great legacy of the PUP will continue. The march has begun to election victory in 2008.
