Orange Walk Town, Tue. November 20, 2007- The local Garifuna community and their organizing committee
are to be congratulated for a well-planned celebration on Monday, November
19th, 2007 to mark national Garifuna Settlement Day.
The event was observed with live cultural performances,
traditional cuisine, cultural paraphernalia, a massive parade and a dance that
followed.
The program attracted a large number of non-Garinagu Belizeans from the entire district who came out to celebrate enthusiastically with their proud Garifuna brothers and sisters. The only major distractions for the day’s event was the unnecessary presence of the UDP including Chendo Urbina (El Lapiador), Landy Burns (Rotarians be careful) and Ruben Scampos (chancy and dishonest). At one point a bystander commented that Chendo was seen seeking to promote himself and his political agenda by displaying the A&R logo on the T-shirts of those participating in the parade. Another onlooker remarked: “The Garifuna community of OW certainly did not need Chendo, Burns, or Campos to be masquerading as if they had anything to do with our culture and people. Next year we will keep them out of our program and out of sight. We don’t need them to create any instability or disunity among out people with their political posturing.” A word to the wise is enough. |
