It will be an understatement to say that dangerous times are
ahead. But as Belizeans, we must remain our brothers’ keepers. We must be
vigilant. And in this sense of patriotism, we have to keep reminding ourselves
of the demands of the days ahead. As decision time draws near, we all must keep
track of events. One of the most important of them is the fight to keep our
freedoms out of the hands of tyrants and power hungry people. The two parties
have shown their colors, and there is no mistake about it.
Under the PUP, Belizeans have enjoyed unparalleled freedom.
The press has flourished. Talk-Shows have blossomed and taken on wings.
Although some have often gone too far, the government has been patient with
everyone. The government does not want to stifle the priceless commodity of
freedom- freedom many are obviously taking for granted. Under the leadership of
Said Musa, freedom of association has not only been left alone, but encouraged.
Even political parties can be formed by almost anyone who is interested in
politics. Freedom is priceless. You can even form groups to investigate the
government with government funding.
HOW DEAN BARROW AND THE UDP WILL DESTROY FREEDOM Imagine living in a Belize where who you talk to, and when you can talk with them is regulated by the government. Imagine living in a country where you can lose your job just by talking to the wrong people. Imagine living in a country where “the full force of the law will come crashing on your head…” if you belong to an unapproved party, and there is even a suspicion that you are ‘stepping out of line’. Well, you don’t need to imagine this. It has already begun to happen under the UDP city and municipal councils. Barrow himself has threatened to meter the law according to who is in whose party. SUSPENDING THE CONSTITUTION The UDP is planning to suspend the constitution if they won the election. They believe that it is the only way to catch their opponents. But suspending the constitution also means that you can be arrested for having a present or former “beef” with any party member. It means that your land can be taken away from you, your job can be taken away, and all your rights as a Belizean can be withdrawn, and it will all be legal. If the UDP is allowed in, you cannot criticize the government. If you asked the prime minister a question, you can be beaten up and arrested. We saw that with the “ballistic Moya” and supported by Barrow. Certainly there will be no vibrant talk-shows, and there will be secret police everywhere to spy on people. Under a UDP government, Belizeans will be paid to spy on each other. This is exactly what we don’t want. Dean and the UDP are going to do this. The signs are everywhere in their behavior. Belizeans, look around at different countries of the world. Dictators came in promising development, but they took away the people’s freedom. Let’s keep what we have: Freedom, Belize, and the PUP! Let’s participate more in government. Let’s love and respect one another. |
