Accusations of political bribery are certainly not new to
the UDP. In 1998 it was the UDP leadership in the hot seat, accused of bribing
another political candidate with money and land. The UDP is once again in that
hot spot – Belmopan residents have seen a certain UDP politician cruising in a
dark-tinted vehicle, and they are questioning who he got it from and what he
paid/promised in return.
Reports to the BELIZE TIMES indicate that this politico’s
newest toy was facilitated by a well known businessman, someone highly
influential in the immigrant community, who owns a business along the George
Price Boulevard. In return that businessman was reportedly given permission to
build a structure which deviates from the original plan for the area.
The BELIZE TIMES understands that the businessman was unable to get an approval to build the bridge from the UDP City Council; therefore, the certain UDP politician’s intervention was crucial but allegedly strings were attached. Reports to this newspaper are that the matter of permitting the businessman to build this structure was a hot issue at meetings of the Council. It even had Deputy Mayor Pete Carrillo threatening to resign if the bridge was built, despite being told that a certain brand new vehicle was being promised. The promise could have been a sweet one, since the Council’s transportation stock had been depleted by two vehicles – one crashed by the Mayor under mysterious circumstances as he drove along the Hummingbird Highway in the wee hours of the morning, the other by the Deputy Mayor himself while jollying in Corozal. But the Council’s final decision was that no approval should be given. It is that same kind of political interference into the autonomous City Council which led to the resignation of six senior directors in Belize City. UDP politicians often go beyond their jurisdiction to fulfil the needs of certain political friends and big money interests. So while this UDP politician rides through the Garden City inside his new dark tinted vehicle, he avoids having to the deal with the casual pleas of assistance from the people of Belmopan. A local newspaper exposed this shameless politician with their headline story “Shabby Chevy” and a photo of the vehicle, stocked with UDP propaganda banners. In addition, reports are that the well-connected UDP friend is not afraid to boast of how he was able to overrule the City Council and at what price. This UDP crowd is dangerous for Belmopan and the rest of Belize. |
