The People’s United Party would like to reiterate its
condemnation of all acts of violence and aggression, especially attacks on
media personalities. When Mose Hyde and Rufus X were attacked, it was
insinuated that the PUP was involved. We were not. Again, with the latest incident
involving Amandala journalist, Ms. Adele Ramos, the editorialist in that
newspaper cast aspersions in our direction. We state, again, categorically that
the People’s United Party had nothing to do with this incident. The PUP
believes in a free media, which is able to express its opinions without fear of
censorship or intimidation.
The PUP also respects the independence of the Judiciary, as
an equal and impartial pillar of the Government of Belize. Of especial
importance is the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which under
the UDP and Dean Barrow from 1993 to 1998 was rife with interference and
perceived partiality, but now under the PUP operates independently and without
political meddling.
However, while we respect the opinions of the Director, we
believe we have the right as an organization to differ with those opinions on
occasion. One such occasion was the DPP’s memorandum to the Police Department
concerning the ‘sign’ incident of November 12, 2007. In our opinion, his
findings were contrary to the evidence as witnessed by all Belizeans. We
respect his right to that opinion, but find it to have no factual foundation.
There were many witnesses as well as visual evidence of Mayor Moya’s unprovoked
and aggressive actions that day. Very few witnesses were called, and it is
uncertain as to whether the DPP reviewed the footage before making his final
determination.
The PUP has always stood for peace and progress. Our
political creed states that every Belizean has right to freedom of expression,
of movement, of religious belief and of association; and that every Belizean
has the right to the protection of life and property according to law. We will
continue to defend these beliefs against a culture of hate, violence and
intimidation perpetuated by the UDP.
