Why oh why do Dean Barrow and his UDP stooges continue to
disrespect the memory of Philip Goldson? Mr. Goldson is an undisputed icon in
Belizean politics. For years in the 1960s Mr. Goldson single-handedly represented
the opposition in the National Assembly.
Mr. Philip Goldson was an indomitable force in Belizean history- a
nationalist to the bone who loved his country.
If anything Dean Barrow and his band of sycophants known as the UDP should be lauding Mr. Goldson- using his memory as a template for party members to emulate. Mr. Goldson was a giant among men, so why, oh why doesn’t the UDP laud Mr. Goldson’s accomplishments and memory? Instead of enshrining- cherishing- Mr. Goldson Dean Barrow and his party the last two weeks has been disrespecting – in effect scorning Mr. Goldson and his rightful place in our history. Case in point is the UDP’s outrageous behavior over Stephen Okeke’s monumental sculpture of Philip Goldson that was unveiled at the point of “Old Mule Park” last week, Monday, December 31st. Sculptor Okeke labored four years on the Goldson project. He financed it out of his pocket. When he went to Dean Barrow for financial assistance, Okeke was summarily turned down. When the sculpture was finally unveiled last Monday, the UDP public relations person and former standard bearer Kenny Morgan put up a stink ostensibly over the logistics of placing in Old Mule Park. Instead of praising the sculpture that extols the memory of Philip Godson, Morgan came to the inauguration to threaten the artist- and warn him that the Goldson memorial had to move. What gall- incredible disrespect! Then to add insult to injury, on Wednesday, January 2nd UDP’s loquacious politico Michael Finnegan attempted some damage control. He said he brokered a deal between UDP CitCo and Okeke where the Flag monument near the Pallotti round-about was offered as a site for the sculpture. Once again Dean and his minions metaphorically kicked dirt over the Goldson monument and Okeke’s artistic efforts. Once again Dean dissed Goldson. There are several germane reasons the Flag round-about is an inappropriate location for the memorial and an insult to Goldson. First and foremost is that to really see the grandeur of the sculpture, it needs to be viewed up-close and personal. The Flag site does NOT afford that kind of viewing. The closest an individual can get to see the sculpture at that site would be some 30 to 40 feet away. The traffic at that major intersection prevents walking across the highway without risking life and limb. By forcing the public to view the sculpture at such great distance, Dean and his UDP flunkies are figuratively and literally diminishing Goldson- both his sculptural likeness and his memory. The portrait bust – not counting the base- is only 4 feet in height. At the distance of 30 feet (the forced viewing distance at the Flag site) the bust will appear visually the size of a postage stamp. Barrow is no fool- he knows that because of the scale and viewing distance factors the sculpture will become a pathetic joke if placed at the Flag site. Which was more than likely his master plan. Urban legend says that when Mr. Goldson was alive Dean Barrow cruelly stated that he didn’t want to take advice from a blind man. And now that Mr. Goldson has passed on, Barrow appears threatened by Philip Goldson’s memory. Does Barrow feel that recognizing Goldson’s significance would somehow steal his thunder? Ergo, the reason why Barrow and his demented set have crapped all over Mr. Philip Goldson. One final comment – Last week Dean Barrow’s mouthpiece, the El Guardian published a report on the Philip Goldson monument attempting some damage control- to make the insult to Goldson less premeditated and vicious. Well, the proof of the pudding is in the taste- and the Guardian piece read (tasted) like unadulterated sh*t. The not-so wise Guardian set couldn’t even spell Philip Goldson’s name right- that is the level of disrespect they have stooped to. For the benefit of the Guardian writers- Mr. Goldson’s first name is spelled with one “l” not two- proper spelling is: “Philip”. |
